Customisation can enhance user experience, but not everything should be customisable. App colour is fundamental to brand recognition and user familiarity.
Colour of well-established apps, play a crucial role in how users recognize and interact with them. Changing these can lead to confusion and reduce the effectiveness of brand identity.
WhatsApp has been green since its inception, and this colour is now strongly associated with the app. Changing it to yellow could disrupt users expectations and recognition, making it harder to quickly identify the app.
Fitness and Find My app icons now look nearly identical due to the same colour overlay. This causes unnecessary confusion, as I have to pause and examine the subtle differences, like the round pattern, to identify the correct app.
Control Center
The change from curved rectangle icons to circles in iOS 18's Control Center raises usability concerns. Curved rectangles potentially offer larger touch areas, which can be advantageous for quick access. Apple values visual consistency across its design ecosystem. By aligning Control Center icons with other elements like app icons, iOS, mac mini, apple watch and many more.
I believe that Apple Control Center icons should closely resemble Apple app icons to maintain a strong brand identity not Android.
Reorganised features by prioritising the most used and improving quick access.
Rearrange Apps
At a recent Apple event, Craig Federighi mentioned that apps sometimes make the wallpaper cluttered, and a feature in iOS 18 that allows users to drag apps wherever they want to improve the appearance of the wallpaper.
On average, users typically have far more than 50 apps. Placing only a few apps on each home screen to maintain a clear view of the wallpaper would result in multiple home screens, potentially 10 or more, which can be frustrating to navigate.
The lock screen is already a dedicated space for showcasing wallpapers without any app icons obstructing the view. Craig Federighi mentioned that people like to keep their apps at the bottom of the screen. While this might be feasible for a few frequently used apps, it becomes impractical for users with a large number of apps.
The primary purpose of the home screen is to provide quick and easy access to apps not wallpaper.
ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence logos look quite similar, especially when shown as short icons. Both feature a rounded line following a loop with the same width. This could resemblance cause confusion.
The Apple Leaf is an iconic part of the Apple logo and also the leaf design closely resembles the loop element like the previous Apple Intelligence logo.
By incorporating the leaf, the logo signifies that Apple Intelligence is a vital and evolving part of Apple's ecosystem, much like how leaves are essential for a tree's growth.
And the Apple Leaf is instantly recognisable and closely tied to Apple's brand, making it a seamless fit.
The previous Siri logo with its waveform design better reflects current design trends, especially seen in iPhone bezels. And it's not necessary to change the logo every year if it already effectively represents the brand.
And also the new Siri logo resembled Adobe Creative Cloud's logo and had a gradient similar to Apple Intelligence, potentially causing confusion.
